SOUTHERN PROVINCE RURAL ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT PROJECT

Southern province Rural Economic Advancement Project funded by the Asian development Bank was lunchaed in November 2001 with the objectives of accelerating economic growth and creating employment and income generating opportunities in the Southern Province. The project amis, to promote private sector participation in economic development in the region and to create a conductive environment to sustain the development. the Project objectives as stipulated in the project Documentt are,

  1. Enterprise development Services Unit
  2. Monitoring and Evaluation Unit
  3. Training Unit
  4. Infrastructure Development Unit and
  5. Administration and Finnance Unit

    In adddition, there are theree district office set up in Galle, Matara and Hmbanthota to act as the regional arm of the project. All functional unit and district offices except enterprise development services unit are headed by a deputy Director either contracted out from the public sector or directly recruited for the project. The Enterprise Development service unit, though it operates as a fuctional unit of PMO, is a private consultancy firm hired to handle the enterprise development component. The team leader of the group is responsible to the Project Director concerning the activities performed by that unit.

The objective of the Tsunami affected areas rebuilding project(TAARP) is to rapidly improve the living conditions and well being of a significiant number of people in the Tsunami affected areas by restoring basic infrastructure,community and public services and livelioods in these areas.

SRI LANKA TSUNAMI AFFECTED AREAS RECOVERY AND TAKE OFF PROJECT (STAARP)

To support the Government of Sri Lanka in rebuilding livelihood and reviving the local economic of the tsunami - affected area through restoration of lifeline service delivery and fishery and tourism industry activities by providing funds for (1) rehabilitation and reconstruction of small- scale infrastructure such as roads and water supply and (2) investments by the affected small-scale enterprises.

Project Aim: Bringing essential infrastructure function and busineess activities back to normally as quickly as possible.

The Southern Development Authority(SDA) was incorporated by act of Parliament No. 18 of 1996 based on the recomendations of the Presidental Task Force for southern area Development. The establishment of the Southern Developoment Authority is a major strategy of the present government to ensure speedy development of the Southern Region.
